I started keeping track in 2025 of all the books I read (not including fanfic, of which I am sure I read tens of millions of words) because I have been reading so few professionally published works. I was going to say 'pro-fic' but some of it has been non-fiction as well. So here's the exciting list of 51 books I read in 2025. An average of *almost* a book a week, although there are some interesting three month gaps where I didn't read anything that wasn't on AO3.

Looking back, looking forward

In 2025, i continued to be obsessed with the Untamed/Mo Dao Zushi, but also got to be in on the ground level on two new mushrooming fandoms, Kpop Demon Hunters and Heated Rivalry. Unlike my usual modus operandi, I actually watched the canon media within a few days of its release (rather than years later lol). Still haven’t made content for either of them, though there will be a few Heated Rivalry multivoice pods at the end of Voiceteam Mystery Box 2025; I’m not sure what I’ll make for KPDH but i definitely want to do something. I should look around for a pofficcer-heavy KPDH discord; I joined an HR one almost at its creation.

2025 was a bit lower output for me than the previous couple of years, but I still count over 50 hours of finished podfic. Most of that is MDZS/The Untamed, with a smattering of Word of Honor and KinnPorsche, and a sprinkling of single pods of other fandoms.

I am discovering, as I try to assemble more precise stats, that I didn’t fill in the details for a lot of 2025’s podfics, so I can’t really say what percentage of MDZS to other fandoms, or Explicit/Mature to Gen/Teen, I did. Also there are a whole bunch I recorded in a frenzy for Voiceteam Tiebreaker that never even got entered into the spreadsheet, let alone edited or posted anywhere, so these stats are pretty bogus really.

No writing or art published in 2025.

Voiceteam Tiebreaker was a first for me this last time; I’ve never been on a team that tried to win from the beginning, and 2025 was no different, except that we all turned out to have no chill anyway, and ended up in a four-way tie for all-possible-team-points scored, which qualified us for the tiebreaker, a 24-hour frantic frenzy of recording as much as possible. So many shortcuts taken - the ‘save as multiple files’ option in audacity (which I also learned this year) was such a lifesaver. It came in super handy for the extended version Gusu Dating Sim that I participated in (starred in, really: I’m the main character :D ) as well. Wish I had known about that option when I recorded the first version!

I did one other new scary fannish thing in 2025, which was to cold-read a longfic and publish a new chapter every day: show me how to lay my sword down. It was received pretty well so I hope to do another one in 2026.

But my biggest goal for 2026 is to pod a 300K fic I asked and received permission for in mid-December. I’m planning on biweekly updates, which would get the whole thing done within the year. At my usual production rates that accounts for about 60-75% of total production though, and I want to do other stuff too, so realistically I may not finish in 2026.

I plan to participate in my usual set of events: Fandom Trumps Hate, Out of the Auditory (can i ~finally~ get “Did the YLLZ really exist?” multivoice completed and posted?), Voiceteam, Pod-O-Ween, etc. I missed signups for Holly Poly 2025, hope to remember and do it in 2026 again.

Dear Creator--

Hi! I'm so glad you're matched with me. I am sure I will love anything you create, but here's some things about what I like.

I am very multifannish and multishipper. I am open to almost any pairing that doesn't trip one of my dnw's listed below. If you're pairing up a member of a canon relationship (eg wangxian) with someone else I'd prefer the leftover person not be bashed--they can be Sir Not Appearing In This Fic, I just don't want them to be (eg) The Evil Ex. I definitely welcome OT3’s combining the canon couple with someone else, as well.

For the last couple of years I've been particularly following Chinese dramas, starting with MDZS/The Untamed (I am still SO OBSESSED) but quickly branching into TGCF, Guardian, Nirvana in Fire, Word of Honor, Imperial Coroner, Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty. My most recent cdrama was Love Between Fairy and Devil.

I also recently watched KinnPorsche and Tale of the Nine-Tailed and would love something from either of them.

I'm also fond of Yuri on Ice! and Jujutsu Kaisen.

There are lots of other fandoms I also enjoy, and I love crossovers between my fandoms, the more niche the better (for examples, see my collected works, lol).

I am happy to receive podfic of anything from my bookmarks.

Some general comments on some of my fandoms:

MDZS/The Untamed	I've no particular preference as to canon; I've read the novel and watched the TV show and most of the donghua. I'll read or listen to almost anything. Modern AU? Fix-it? Angst about self-sacrifice? Bring it all on! Pet rarepair: Jin Guangyao/Xue Yang
Word of Honor	I love this so much. Wen Kexing owns my entire heart. Gu Xiang deserved so much better.
Discworld	I particularly love Monstrous Regiment and its characters, and am also very fond of Night Watch, so anything that evokes that spirit is great. The interactions between Vimes and Vetinari fascinate me.
Imperial Coroner	There's not a lot of fics to choose from, but I love the OT4 vibes of this show.
Chronicles of Amber	My oldest fandom, yay, and the source of my pseud. 1000% Yes to Brand/Fiona, if you can find it, but I love the whole dysfunctional Amber family. Please no gamefic (OCs are ok but the story shouldn't center around them).

Friday Five: Cooking

1. Do you cook regularly or does someone else cook for you?

We eat out or order delivery or get carryout A Lot. But when cooking at home does happen, it's usually me.

My family have minimally-intersecting food requirements. It's easier to get several different meals from a restaurant than to make multiple at home. So when anyone cooks at home, it's either one of the few things we can all eat and enjoy, or someone still has to fend for themselves with delivery or quick food like a sandwich.

But I made jambalaya yesterday for three of the four of us (Christopher doesn't eat that but he was out for the evening anyway) and it was delicious. There's a lot of leftovers so we'll be eating it for a while. I'll freeze some of it for a quick meal in a few weeks.

Why is the cook usually me? Well, my family also have various disabilities and chronic pain issues that make standing at a stove difficult.

Tammie did make us a lovely batch of French toast on Sunday.

2. Which are you better at making: sweet or savory foods?

Either. Both. I am more likely to be making savory things unless it's a special occasion though.

3. If you had to work as a chef in a restaurant of your choice, which restaurant would best complement your current culinary skills?

Somewhere I didn't have to make the same thing every day, so a changing menu. I get bored of cooking the same things all the time.

My biggest struggle when cooking is getting all the food hot and ready at the same time, partly because of my kitchen constraints (eg, I can't run the airfryer and the microwave at the same time or I'll blow a fuse) and partly because I mis-estimate how long something will take. Not a good quality for a restaurant chef.

4. What is a cooking tip that you know, but other people generally aren’t aware of?

- Something I used last night: to cook rice on the stovetop, start it before everything else in the meal. Add 2 parts liquid to 1 part rice by volume, adding flavorings (if any) to a large saucepan (ie, bigger than you think you need for the total volume). Cook at medium heat with a lid on until it boils hard, then take it off the heat and ignore it until everything else is done. Rice will continue cooking and absorb all the liquid.

- Use more seasonings. Published recipes almost never call for enough spices/herbs. Taste what you're cooking and adjust accordingly. But specifically, add more garlic if garlic is in there at all. No, more than that. For sweet dishes, add (more) cinnamon.

5. Do you have a recipe you would like to share?

Other than the rice recipe above? Hmm. Most things I make I do from 'what feels right' rather than a recipe.

What I tend to default to for recipe sharing is a strawberry ice cream recipe from a book called "Frozen Desserts": https://www.amazon.com/Frozen-Desserts-Definitive-Sorbets-Delights/dp/0312143435/ref=sr_1_1?crid=RF27SQ2O5OXA . My copy has a hand-written note reading "This is the best strawberry ice cream EVER!. (Amazon is helpfully telling me I bought this book 22 years ago.) If you have an icecream maker I highly recommend this cookbook, btw. All kinds of interesting ice creams, sorbets, gelatos, etc. I also highly recommend the ice cream makers that have a tub you pre-freeze rather than needing lots of rock salt and ice. The main trick is that you puree your strawberries with balsamic vinegar and leave them to macerate in it for a few hours before making the ice cream.

Strawberries	450 g	1 lb
Sugar	150 g	3/4 cup
Balsamic vinegar	15 ml	1 Tbsp
Heavy cream	150 ml	1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp

Puree the strawberries, sugar and vinegar together. Pour mixture into a bowl, cover and refrigerate for 2-3 hours. Combine the strawberry mixture with the cream and freeze in an icecream maker.

IceBreaker Challenge! Tell us about yourself

Hmmm. I had been on the outskirts of fandom and a lurker for a very long time. I got an ao3 account in 2013 and read massive amounts of fanfic, then eventually had a thought like 'I have a really long commute and have been listening to audiobooks. I wonder if there are audiobooks for fanfic?', at which point I discovered podfic. Listened to lots of hours of that, before thinking that while my writing mojo had mostly dried up maybe podfic was a way I could give back to fandom. Created my first podfic and posted it in December of 2014.

The author of the fic I chose for my first podfic connected me to some podficcers she knew, and I started connecting with the podfic fandom, first on livejournal and then eventually here on dreamwidth and twitter and then on discord. Connecting with other podficcers had prodigious effects on my amount of fanworks created, and even spawned a few written works.

I started out in HP fandom, despite a deep and abiding love for the Chronicles of Amber that predates HP by quite a few years, but Amber has a different kind of fandom (ADRPG my beloved). I've always been a huge multifan, though there's usually one or two that are the core of my obsessions. From HP I moved on to the MCU for a while, then Good Omens had my entire soul for a year or so, and for the last three? four? it's been MDZS/The Untamed (I'm a frankencanon kinda gal) with sojourns into other C-dramas and other Asian media. Except for HP which I have divorced--HP fans, it's not you, you're all lovely. It's JKR's fault--I never really leave a fandom, and I'm not shy about podficcing for fandoms I'm not in, either, so my fandoms list on ao3 is...eclectic.

As are the content and ratings and everything else in my works. My profile says "expect a wild ride careening from softe to filthy across a wide landscape of fandoms and pairings from the juggernauts to the tiny niche fandoms and rarepairs with a total of seven works". It's accurate.

So that's my fannish bio. Personal bio on dreamwidth is a bit out of date but not wrong. I did add an update note sometime in the last two years since it mentions I'm learning Chinese and re-learning Japanese (Saturday morning language classes means getting up early on weekends, gah). It doesn't mention that I've been a member of the St Louis Women's Chorus for the last seven years and that's become a core part of my offline social life and community. Alto 1, babieee.

I updated my profile on AO3 quite recently (over the summer, I think--I added a clause about do not use my works to train any AI or machine learning engine), and I happen to have reread it just a couple days ago. It's all still good.

As usual I had to edit down some of the other text to make room because my profile bio is Right At the limit of character length. FYI if you didn't know, all the html tags, both those you enter yourself and the ones AO3 adds for you when you click 'save', are counted in the total. So even if the character counter says you have a few characters to spare, you don't.

I should do something with my bios on DW and Tumblr. Note to self: revisit those.

Welcome to 2024, may it be filled with wonder and delight in all ways!

My 2024 started with fireworks (very literal and yes, wonderful and delightful). I'm in Riga, Latvia, visiting my girlfriend Christine and her husband Rob, and we went up to the roof of her apartment building to watch 360 degrees of fireworks. She'd told me it would happen but I hadn't quite realized just how _many_ there would be and for how long.

It's been a busy few days. We arrived on 12/27, and have been doing Christmas and New Year stuff the whole time so far, meeting Christine's collection of friends, mostly Indians who live and work in Latvia or Lithuania. Today is quieter so far, doing laundry and putzing on the internet. Starting tomorrow we'll do more tourist stuff.

As I say every year, I want to post more. And if 2023 is any indication, I probably won't. But nonetheless.

I am very multifannish and multishipper. For the last couple of years I've been particularly following Chinese dramas, starting with MDZS/The Untamed (I am still SO OBSESSED) but quickly branching into TGCF, Guardian, Nirvana in Fire, Word of Honor, Imperial Coroner, Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty. Friday Five: Multilingual

1. How many languages do you speak?

English. Pretty fluent in Spanish. Can get by in French. Used to be fluent in Japanese but I've forgotten so much. I'm currently working to relearn it. Learning Mandarin Chinese right now (I've finished the Duolingo course and am now taking in person classes). And I'm doing Duolingo Swedish at the moment because I'm going to Sweden IN TWO WEEKS OMG. I've also taken a semester of Russian and three semesters of New Testament Greek (I've forgotten almost all of both of those).

So that's a list of eight, but I'll say I can speak four.

2. What is your mother tongue?

English.

3. What is a language that you would like to learn and why?

Other than the ones I am actively working on? Bosnian, because there are so many Bosnian immigrants in my city and I'd like to be able to communicate with my neighbors.

4. Does it bother you when people speak a language you don't know in front of you? Why or why not?

Nope. Not everything is about me or even any of my business.

5. Speak to me.

SWEDEN in less than two weeks! I'm going to meet up with my girlfriend Christine that I haven't seen in a year, and haven't seen very often for the last five years before that. She and her husband moved to Europe six years ago. They live in Latvia, and I was planning to visit her there this past summer, but due to Covid and the war in Ukraine, it didn't seem like a good idea. I was all disappointed that I wouldn't get to see her, until I woke up one day thinking, "Why don't we meet up somewhere else in Europe?" I suggested that to her, she suggested we go to this tiny town north of the Arctic Circle in hopes of seeing the aurora borealis, and that's what we're doing.

Lotus root & pork rib soup - attempt #1

Ever since I watched the Untamed for the first time eighteen months ago, I have wanted to know: What does lotus root & pork rib soup taste like???? And since I am a white person with no Chinese relatives or friends, and don't know of any local restaurants that serve it, my only option was to make it myself and hope I got somewhere close.

I visited my go-to international grocery last summer and perused the produce section but could find no lotus roots. I even asked, but they told me they didn't have any and I should call another day to find out whether they had them. Being moderately phone-phobic, that wasn't going to happen.

Then I took a Chinese class from the local community college this spring, and the professor kept mentioning a different Asian grocery. Week ago I went there with my daughter, and found lotus roots: fresh, dried, frozen, or pickled! I bought some fresh ones, and also some pork ribs and dates, and a giant pile of other assorted Asian food items I hadn't eaten in a while, and went home thinking I'd make soup the next day.

Except then I looked at the recipes--don't ask why I didn't do that while I was still at the store!--and there were several additional ingredients I still needed. We went back Saturday and acquired those, and I made the soup yesterday.

Speaking of recipes. I had found three, and what I made was different from all of them for various reasons.

I hate peanuts, so those were getting left out no matter what. I could only find one kind of dates, and I didn't find goji berries (I didn't ask. I imagine the store had them, but I wasn't bovvered).

My ingredients list
- lotus roots
- pork ribs, blanched
- about 1 c dried seaweed, soaked overnight
- about 1/2 c dried scallops, soaked for 1/2 hr in hot water
- about 1/2 c dried cuttlefish, soaked for 1/2 hr in hot water
- 10 dates, soaked for 5 min or so in hot water
- two hunks of ginger, sliced
- half a head of garlic, chopped

I followed the ao3 recipe directions to blanch the pork ribs. Boiled everything together and then simmered it for four-ish hours. I did not add any salt because the fishy items were already salty. The house was REDOLENT of garlic while it cooked.

I also made chili oil (by filling a small bottle half full of red pepper flakes and a bit of garlic powder and then the rest of the way with sesame oil).

My overall opinion is that my soup was very good but a bit too fishy. I think about half as much of the dried scallop and cuttlefish, and possibly less seaweed as well. It would probably be good to actually add the scallions at the end like I intended to, and a bit more grated ginger may also help. Might add a bit of pepper next time. A few drops of my chili oil were a nice addition.

March comes in like a lamb

First of March, warm breezy day in STL. So nice to have the windows open. And for a change, it doesn't look like this week is going to echo the last three, where each time, we had one warm day, then a very sudden temperature drop, a ton of rain and then sleet-ice-snow. This week looks like just warm for a few days, then cooler but no rain or snow. It might be spring! Or it might just be a sample, with more winter to come, but I'll enjoy it anyway.

It's been a busy couple of months. We went away in January for an extended weekend as a late anniversary celebration, and on the first full day, Tammie broke her left ankle. So our weekend turned into running around between pharmacies and urgent cares, and the subsequent several weeks have consisted of me trying to keep the household running basically by myself. Rose has stepped up to help, thank the gods, but she's not all that physically capable either. In some ways it's been a relief, in that there's no 'who's gonna do it' questions that end in nothing but discussion happening until everyone is too tired to do anything anyway. It's either I do it, or it doesn't get done.

I've managed to watch a little bit of media in amongst all that; Chris and I watched the new season of the Witcher, which I found disappointing in some way I wasn't able to pin down. I wanted Geralt and Jaskier to reconcile. I did appreciate the Yen/Jask commiseration over Geralt walking away from both of them, though.

I've been rewatching Word of Honor with Ollie, somewhat inconsistently, but we've got two episodes left now. They are going to be so upset with me once we watch the next one, I fear.

And I watched all of the Imperial Coroner, which was very sweet and cute--and I already made a podfic for it, of one of the thirteen whole fics in English. Of those 13, several are f/f, and several more are OT4, so that's a nice unusual ratio.

Just the other day watched Kimi no Na wa (Your Name) which was beautiful, a little sad and a little hopeful.

I started taking an actual beginning Chinese class. It's pretty travel-oriented, from what I can tell after just two lessons, and so far we haven't done any like grammar or vocab drills, much less tried to learn any hanzi, just repeating sentences. Most of which I already understood or knew, because at this point I'm 18 months in to Duolingo Mandarin. (82% on the last mastery quiz, though a lot of that is because I'm good at guessing. But 'figuring it out from context' is also a thing, so go me?) One of the women in the class is also into the Untamed and other dramas so maybe new friend? Haven't read anything but fic in the last couple months though. The last thing I actually read was Iron Widow. Which, funny story. I had borrowed it from the library, read and enjoyed, and then the next day Christine was like 'I bought you a book I think you'll like!' and it was Iron Widow. She's also bought me the new Good Omens audiobook but I haven't listened to it yet. I haven't really listened to much of anything, barely keeping up with my podfic gifts (and I still have one six-hour one that I have only managed the first half hour of). I miss my daily two-hour round trip commute for exactly ONE reason.

Currently not even going to the office for the standard-since-september of one day a week, because they're remodeling our floor. And also because of Tammie's leg, and.....ohhhh! I almost forgot! ( Eyesight and eye treatment stuff )it was like magic. My vision is back to 20/30 or so, without glasses.
