Mystery water trucks

I arrived at my street tonight--after an hour's drive on snowy roads--to find it barricaded with a row of traffic cones. "Grrr," quoth I, "How'm I supposed to get home?"

I turned in at the alley and backed into my normal curbside parking place.

Once inside the house, I find flashing yellow lights outside the front door on a white truck helpfully labeled "water", and another, yellow truck parked a few yards further away. No sign of what they're doing, but it's clearly too much muscle for shutting our water off for non-payment (besides which, the water meter's on the other side of the house anyway).

Yesterday there had been a section of the street about halfway down the block to the west that was posted "Emergency No Parking Water Department" but no further information is forthcoming.

Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink

Shortly after my last post, we noticed that the flashy light truck had vanished. Moments later, a loud and prolonged knock at the front door. "We have to turn your water off starting at 8:30 for about six hours."

This was 8:12; we promptly ransacked the house for some clean buckets and filled them for flushing and washing purposes.

Drinking water we actually have, thanks to the water cooler we got from [livejournal.com profile] bbwoof and [livejournal.com profile] beckyzoole and the full jugs courtesy of Rog and Hunter.

But for even more fun, I picked up the computer to post the update, and whaddaya know. No internet. No cable, either.

Chris called Charter, they sent a "reset signal", and it's just come back up. Whee.

(The water everywhere? Look out the window.)
