The other day on the Diane Rehm show on NPR, the panel were discussing a potential war with Iraq. I found it highly amusing that one of the panelists remarked on how the world had changed since the last Gulf War. He said (paraphrased), "It's harder for us to get cooperation from other nations because their people are more outspoken against their governments' involvement." Which means: the US supports freedom and democracy around the world...until the people get uppity and use those freedoms to disagree with the US' policies.

Same thing here at home, isn't it. Voicing opposition to any government action taken "in Defense of Homeland Security" is "unpatriotic" at best. What happened to the Bill of Rights?

There's a quote from a south-east asian leader (If I remember correctly, it was in an old issue of Wired, and was from the PM of Indonesia or Malaysia) concerning freedom of speech.

"Of course, our people must be free to express whatever opinions they have. But they must be the right ones!"

We are free to express our deeply held beliefs that the government are Right and Good.
