Goals 2021

Jan. 8th, 2021 10:08 am
semperfiona: (Default)
Some goals for this year:
  • attend Ambercon US. it's been seven years since I last attended, and it's virtual this year so there really aren't any reasons I can't. Will mean some homework (character generation, always my bugbear)
  • finish some of my writing WIPs
    • wangxian bartender and CEO in 1980's Hong Kong
    • jgy/xy bonnie-and-clyde-style destruction spree
    • wangxian modern idiots in college - collab w Ollie
    • niecest con-non-con sequel to Virtue Vanquished - collab w Ollie
    • ineffable husbands ephemera multimedia
  • 300K words of podfic. well on the way already, tbh
    • With Such Impossible Conveyance, jc centric multivoice, 99k (in progress, chapter 6/39 complete)
    • wide enough and wild, wangxian fix-it, 64K, in progress (nothing published yet), Podfic Big Bang
  • podfic bingo blackout
  • cover art bingo blackout
  • finish Duolingo Chinese. tbh I don't know how doable this is, but at least keep making progress. find a source for continued study
  • finish Duolingo Japanese, same
  • deal with/respond to my ridiculous AO3 inbox (800+ unread messages, yikes)
  • deal with/tag my ridiculous AO3 bookmarks (400+ bookmarks, mostly untagged)
  • finish shows I'm currently watching
    • Guardian
    • Nirvana in Fire
    • Haikyuu
    • Yuri on Ice
I did eliminate ALL the unread emails from my gmail in December, which had been over 29000, and all my unopened voicemail, and I've managed to keep both of those at zero since, which is really amazing and somehow freeing as well. So additional goal, keep it that way

I have really not been posting this year. Even less than normal. Which has in the past sometimes been a sign of depression but really has not, this year. I've been surprisingly content and happy, what with all the *waves at the outside world*.

Last real updates in February and March. Dance lessons! AirBnB night! All kinds of goals related to singing!

And then the world changed, and we've hardly left the house since mid-March. Choir rehearsals & concerts cancelled. I now work from home 100% (Tammie and Chris have been doing up to 3 days a week in the office but probably an average of 1 day/week over all, due to illness or covid exposure or whatever). I've put gas in my car exactly three times in eight months.

Tammie was ill for six weeks or so in the spring; at first we thought Covid, but it wasn't. We still don't know exactly what it was, but she's been on steroids and several other new meds and is feeling mostly better, although the meds have had their share of unpleasant side effects.

Chris is doing more-or-less the same as usual. He's recently received a VA disability rating: we finally convinced him to apply, after 30 years out of the army when he should have been getting disability much of this time.

Rosa and her dad were both exposed to Covid recently, while she was with him for the weekend. They got tests (his was positive, hers was negative) but neither of them showed any symptoms, and after quarantining together for two weeks she's just come back home.

I've been generally healthy, modulo the usual summer allergies. I walk the dog twice everyday (occasional exceptions for nasty weather).

Back in September my parents extended a Thanksgiving invitation to all of us (which would be a first; C&T have only been to my parents' house once, on a random weekend in April a couple years ago--we all stayed in a hotel). My sister and her family were also going to come up from California. I'd thought even then it would probably be a bad idea due to the pandemic, and Tammie was disinclined to go regardless unless I come out fully about our marriage (which I need to do, I know; we've been married almost three years now). Then a few weeks ago we found out that my sister's breast cancer had recurred, and she was going to be on chemo/radiation so wouldn't be able to travel, but Rivendell!we were still welcome....until last week when dad called to say sorry, he was going to have to rescind the invitation because Wisconsin is a covid hotspot. I said that's ok I was about to decline it anyway, since Missouri is a hotspot too and also Rose was just exposed. But I've set up a family zoom for the Saturday, and hopefully that will at least be nice.

CHARIS has been meeting virtually, every other week or so, which is NOTHING like real choir but at least offers a chance to sing and hang out. We all have to be muted, because internet lag would make the sound awful. But we did make a virtual choir video that I'm in, at 1:17:40ish of this cabaret showcasing choir members and friends.

Fandom has been kind of my refuge and community as well. I am still very fond of Good Omens but I have not been as connected to that fandom since September, because I fell in love hard with The Untamed/Mo Dao Zu Shi. I did attend the virtual Ineffable Con in October--which I'd never have been able to do in a normal year, since it was based in London--and co-presented a panel on podfic, watchable here! (sorry about the first five minutes of tech issues)

I have been INCREDIBLY prolific with podfic this year so far. Over 48 hours, 400K words so far, and I hope to get to a full 50 hours. Doubt I'll make it to 500k words, but one never knows. I have a lot of time off the rest of the year, so it could happen. If I get 70K more, I'll have surpassed a million words total podfic (and nearly half of it from 2020).

And in completely unexpected news, I've been WRITING. Not a lot, and some rather niche interest pairings (lol), but still. It's basically all been MDZS, except for a few hundred words back in January on an HP/Amber crossover that I've re-abandoned subsequently. Here, listen to me and some friends sing an MDZS filk that I wrote. And then hate me for the next several weeks because that shit is an EARWORM.

Part of the reason for all the writing is inspiration from a new fandom friend, Ollie. They and I watched the last 20 or so episodes of the Untamed together (ie, starting the ep at the same time and live-reacting on chat) . We've been chatting A LOT on discord DMs, and they like to send me snippets of writing or plot ideas or headcanons. Which I started sending responses to, and now we have an actual co-written fic, a bunch of plotted/outlined/partially-written stuff, and one set of fic-written-by-them and sequel-written-by-me (to be published this week--with my shield or on it). Plus I have a (small) pile of ideas and outlines all my own. I am shooketh.

AND AND AND...Under the influence of my infatuation with MDZS, I started doing Chinese lessons on duolingo. I've done almost 60 days straight, and a total of 65 or so? But because I'm me, and always like to make things difficult for myself, I am ALSO doing Japanese at the same time. As my longtime readers know, I have a bachelor's degree in Japanese and was near-fluent once upon a time (in the late 80's/early 90's) but I've forgotten a lot. So I had been hoping that I could resurrect that knowledge as well, given that languages-not-english seem to all live somewhere similar in my brain. And it's been working, I think. I understand tons more of the anime that I watch with Rosa than I did even three months ago. Still use the subtitles some, but less and less.

I am apparently Too Old for Tumblr. I've had an account for ages, never really did anything with it, but I have sent a few asks to people requesting to create podfic for their fics. In most cases I followed up by other methods because I never saw a reply.

Today I finally figured out my inbox. And Lo and Behold there is a reply there from 2015 granting me permission to podfic something....which has been podded twice by other people in the meantime. Major self-eye-roll.

On the other hand, there is also a Yes reply to an ask I sent this morning, so that's at least timely.

Today's been a day.

Tammie and Chris are in Iowa to spend time with his father, who is recovering from surgery. I stayed home to dog-sit and such, and had big plans to accomplish some projects.

- I finished and posted my Podfic Big Bang 45k Thorki project this morning. YAY! (reveals 11/1)

- I have a bunch of fabric wall panels I wanted to install in my recording studio today, but they're in the storage unit. So when I was about to leave to go get them, I realized I'd need the key to the unit. Which is in Iowa on Chris's keyring. So no studio revamping for me today. BOO!

- The upstairs toilet seat has been broken for ages. We ordered a new one, and a bidet attachment thingie as well, but hadn't gotten around to installing them. So since I couldn't do my original project, I decided to do this one instead. Got everything nice and tightly bolted together...and it turns out the water supply hose to the bidet leaks. I tried everything to get it to stop, reattached it multiple times, with and without plumbers tape, no joy. I had to disconnect it completely. BOO!

- Then I decided to wash the dishes, as Tammie had requested a clean kitchen for their return. Ok, so I ran two loads through the dishwasher, and then started a sinkful of water for the items that don't fit in the dishwasher (which is a lot of stuff; we only have an 18-inch dishwasher). Somewhere in moving around the kitchen to collect dishes or a towel or whatever, I bumped my left foot against a bag on the floor. I didn't think much about it, until I happened to look down and see that my white and black striped sock was now red and black. The bag I bumped into contains several guillotine blades (the paper cutter kind, y'all, I am something of a revolutionary but I'm not Madame Defarge), and I had acquired a deep inchlong gash in the top of my foot. BOO! And also OUCH, though less ouch than you might expect.

- Since my partners are out of town, I had Rose call her father to see if he'd take me to the urgent care. He would, and he did, and two hours later I had four stitches and a tetanus booster. Not exactly yay, but certainly better than any alternative I've got.

Setting myself the goal of 100 works on my AO3 page before the end of October!

I'm at 88 now, I've got two unrevealed podfics due to be revealed on 10/1, one that just went up at HP podfic fest but isn't on my AO3 yet, two parts in multi-voice things that will hopefully be posted soon--that's 93--and I just posted a draft of the bi/poly/smutty fic that I've referenced here a few times. Yes, it's finally done! One more SPaG check and I'm setting it to live. That's 94.

My podfic big bang project is nearly done and will be posted 10/31; that's 95.

So, I need five more things that I can get done without imperiling the Big Bang project, and ideally which fulfill various squares on my new bingo card, because two birds one stone.

Dear Podficcer --

Hi! I'm so glad you're matched with me. I am sure I will love anything you create, but here's some things about what I like.

I have been mostly in and around the Harry Potter fandom, but I've stuck my toes in the waters elsewhere too. My earliest love is The Chronicles of Amber, and as of this summer I am ALL IN for the Good Omens fandom, though my works page doesn't necessarily show it, as I've been finishing up a lot of prior commitments.

This table is by no means an order of preference.

FandomComments
Harry PotterMy OTP is Harry/Draco, and my OT3 combines them with Hermione. I am open to lots of other stuff, although I'm partial to Slytherin/Gryffindor pairings (see ambiguously "bad" characters below). I'm not fond of Harry with Ginny, but I don't like bashing her. I don't have any particular preferences for femslash pairings. Bring them on :-D
Good OmensOTP: Aziraphale/Crowley, like nearly everyone. So much delicious oblivious pining. If six millennia isn't a slow burn, I don't know what is. That, and it turns out that blasphemy turns me right the hell ON. Something about twisting my Christian upbringing.
MCUI'm open to most anything here, although I really like Pepper/Natasha (and Pepper/Nat/Maria), and I'm quite fond of Thor/Loki and Steve/Bucky.
DiscworldAgain, most any pairing but I'm not so much into the smexxxy in this fandom.
The Vorkosigan SagaOpen to anything here, but again not so much with the smexxy.
The Chronicles of AmberOTP: Fiona/Brand, OT3: Fiona/Brand/Mandor. Please no game fic with all/mostly original characters. If "most" of the characters in the story are not from the books, skip it. I find most game fic is really only interesting to the players in the game, sorry.

Things I love include:
Bad-ass women
Humor
Happy endings/HEA
Parent!fic
Hot hot sex (I'm more into slash and femslash than het in my fic, but I'm open to it, especially if there's one or more of my other loves in the story)
Ambiguously "bad" characters (eg Draco, Loki, Crowley, Brand)
Redemption narratives
Fake dating
Slow burn
Forced cohabitation
Plotty fic
Polyamory
Three-somes & more-somes
Switching
Explicitly bisexual/pansexual characters
Gender fluidity/non-binary
Gloves used sexually
Found/constructed family

Things I dislike:
A/B/O dynamics
Not a huge fan of mpreg in general
Most horror

Definitely Do Not Want:
Rape/non-con (dubcon is ok, and offscreen non-pairing non-con is ok too)
Explicitly described injury to eyes
Extreme kinks such as watersports/scat/vore
Torture

I have fallen into a rabbit hole of Johnlock podfic.

I created a "favorite tag" of podfic on AO3 a while back. When I clicked on it a few days ago, I saw an interesting looking Good Omens podfic so went to listen to it. It was on SoundCloud, so I streamed it (and it was really good).

But what I wasn't expecting was for SoundCloud to advance to another podfic after the first one finished. That one happened to be Johnlock. I listened to it, and then the next and the next and so on, skipping only the ones that start with "chapter 7" or "chapter 2" because I have no idea where "chapter 1" might be, and while driving is not a good time to be searching.

It's been a fun few days.

Interestingly, I don't even have the SoundCloud app visibly active on my phone. But each time I get in the car and Bluetooth connects, it starts right back up where it left off the time before.

Half-a-year gone (and then some), checking in on my goals for 2019 as posted on 1/13:

1. Post to DW at least once a week, not counting the monthly book list.
Haha no. Mostly managing once a month, but inconsistent at best.

2. Finish Yes My Queen and post it.
I've been working on SO MUCH PODFIC this year that I really haven't made time for writing since winter. Story languishes at about 4800 words, last edited in March or April. Still hoping, though. I considered joining the HP WIP fest for some motivation, but I've got a lot of pending podfic deadlines so I didn't. Does anyone out there want to alpha-read a Harry/Hermione/Draco (plus bonus Luna) polyamory PWP-with-feelings and kick my butt into gear?

3. 100K words of podfic.
Already done. If I complete all my projected podfics by their deadlines, plus the ones I'm expecting to sign up for around Christmas and my ongoing progress on podfic bingo, I should make 200K easily.

4. Audition for a solo in the Spring and Fall concerts.
I tried out. Didn't get one, but I didn't do well in the audition, either, even though I'd nailed the songs at voice lessons earlier in the week. Bah.

5. Perform at least one song at a karaoke.
Not yet.

I'm struggling with a weird aversion/phobia about practicing at home when the family is around; I don't know how I imagine I'll be able to sing on stage.

Dear Podficcer --

I'm mostly in and around the Harry Potter fandom, but I've stuck my toes in the waters elsewhere too, and my earliest love is The Chronicles of Amber. If you were to find something from Amber...I'd love you forever. Of course, I'll love you forever no matter what you create. :-D

The last few weeks I've been mainlining Thor/Loki stories, with a dash of Dean/Sam for variety, and going back to the Harry/Draco tag for comfort reads. I just finished binging the Good Omens miniseries, and I'm about to dive into Aziraphale/Crowley fic.

I'm kind of looking to widen my horizons, so I don't want you to feel overly limited, but I'll try listing some things to give you ideas. Even where all I list is an OTP, I'm open to listening to other pairings. Or gen, as well.

Fandom Pairings

I don't have any particular preferences for femslash pairings.
MCUOpen to most anything here, although I really like Pepper/Natasha (and Pepper/Nat/Maria), and as mentioned above, I've just fallen hard for Thorki. I like seeing Loki top, but it's not a requirement. I'm generally a proponent of switching in any case. Also fond of Steve/Bucky.
DiscworldAgain, most any pairing but I'm not so much into the smexxxy in this fandom.
Star Wars (eps 4-8, Rogue One)OT3 Finn/Rey/Poe
The Vorkosigan SagaOpen to anything here, but again not so much with the smexxy.

So I'm the girl who always jumps into the deep end with any kind of new skill. Knitting? Not for me the dishcloths and garter stitch scarves, I knit a whole sweater. Lace knitting? Ridiculously complicated shawls. Podfic? A 10K fic. Collaborative/multivoice podfic organization and edit? A 13-part, 4K radio play modern Hamlet.

Still one part available, only 9 lines to read. Sign up and more info here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kSVWB2cUofkDqLDBXrpwpPun8gZgmHUH49S4po2tL5Q/edit?usp=sharing

I hope to have it edited and posted by mid-June.
semperfiona: Conversation hearts on the keys of a piano (music)
One week to concert, and Tammie's got a nasty cough/cold and my throat is scratchy. Yikes!

Still have four songs I'm not confident on the memorization (or in one case, even the notes, bah I hate when our part is 90% doos and oohs, I have a terrible time remembering which ones and how many and what notes they go on). Time for much cramming.

And somewhere in there I've got to make time to edit my podfic polygons assignment.

And tidy the house because my parents are coming for the show. They're not staying with us, and may not even visit the house because of how the schedule works out, but...

Luckily, tomorrow is a work holiday.

Missed posting the Sunday Slash the Game challenge this week, and didn't do my entry for last week's challenge yet either, so skipping it until Sunday. But if anyone wants to play, there are collections on AO3. Hoping this week gives some characters I know a bit more about.

Posted a new podfic "The Year of Non-Magical Thinking" (Drarry, explicit, 1:30:00) the other day. I originally started it in October, then set it aside to fulfill some fest obligations, and then my family bought me a new mic for Christmas. So I re-recorded all of it with the new mic and now it's finished, yay!

First Figure Drawing class last night went well, after a very frustrating fifteen minutes or so trying to find 1) the building itself (I went around the block twice and into two different *wrong* parking lots before finding the right one) 2) the way into the building (I walked most of the way around to find the front door--all others were locked--carrying 10 pounds or so of art materials on a very cold winter night) and 3) the classroom once inside. I have a long way to go before I'll be happy with what I'm producing. Our model (male) had the longest ballsack I've ever seen, and I've seen a fair few men naked.

Haven't had (or created) an opportunity to work on my fic for a couple weeks now, and I'm starting to worry that I'm going to lose momentum.

ChoirChorus practice continues well. I still don't understand the distinction that people make on this: if a group of people sing together, aren't they a choir? Why are we a chorus and not a choir?

My parents are planning to come down for the concert in April, which I am pleased about: they have yet to see me/us perform. But ye gods and little fishes, do we have a lot of house cleaning to do between now and then.

Tammie has convinced me to join her in an online class called "The Dance of the Muse and the Critic" that's supposed to help engage one's creativity without all the self-negativity that can stopper up the flow.

Day 13

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

1. Post to DW at least once a week, not counting the monthly book list.
So far doing pretty well, posting almost daily. But it's still January.

2. Finish Yes My Queen and post it.
*fingers crossed*

3. 100K words of podfic.
Last year i did 111K, so this should be relatively achievable.

4. Audition for a solo in the Spring and Fall concerts.
I tried out last spring. Didn't get one, but I didn't do well in the audition, either. I missed the fall audiitions for reasons of Chris being in hospital.

5. Perform at least one song at a karaoke.
I've been working with my voice coach on Come to My Window and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and have four or so other songs to start working on. I'd like to try singing one of these for an audience other than her.

Day 11

In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

Well, I can't really speak about my creative process when it comes to writing, since I haven't written anything since 2012 or so, until this fic bit me on the night of 1/1. I can say that for this particular fic, I have been visualizing bits and pieces of it at night when going to sleep, and then putting down in pixels the next day whatever I thought of the night before. I've also just gone to my outline and picked a scene or section that I wanted to work on. I have no idea how long it will end up, or how long it will take to get there.

For podfic, though, I can be a lot more certain. Lately it's mostly been signing up for a challenge or fest, and then reading all the fic I can find that fits the stated parameters (recipient's Dear Creator letter, or the fest theme, or length requirements, whatever). I'll put three or four possibilities into a new tab on my Podfic Record spreadsheet, and after a couple-few days of pondering, choose one to do. That one gets added to the "Completed Podfics" page (yeah, even though it's not complete yet), with its due date and other assorted info about the fic and fest. The others, if I really like them, may go into the 'someday' tab on the spreadsheet. I read fics from that when I have time between tests, and sometimes also use it as a source for fest fics.

I usually record in the evenings after work, on whichever evening I don't have other scheduled plans. Sometimes on weekends. I have a small room in my house which is set up as an office that I use as a recording studio. I go in there, close out all the animals and other humans, turn off the air conditioner (if it's summer) and connect my mic to my computer.

I don't do a lot of the things that people recommend for podficcing. I don't pre-read the story out loud before I start recording, I don't mark up the text--I read off my kindle, so marking up is not possible. Reading off the kindle also means I don't have to worry about sentences and paragraphs that cross pages.

I am an edit-as-you-go podficcer. I read until I screw something up, whether it's a word I just can't seem to get my mouth to make, or I transposed some words, or left some out, or I just don't like the inflections or voice I used for the line. At that point, I reread the bad line until I get it right, then delete all the wrong versions. I also go back to the last time I stopped and listen to the recording of those sections as well, in case there are errors I failed to notice at the time, or outdoor street noises that got picked up, or--and hopefully this problem has been solved with my new mic-- there are weird buzzes behind my narration, making perfectly good recording into complete shit. If there are any of those problems, I fix them too.

Usually I can read and first-pass edit about an hour's worth of fic in an evening. Anything longer will take multiple sessions. (I have one half-complete project that I may have to start over if I don't want to complete it with the old mic.)

Once I complete the first draft reading, with all the initial edits as I went along, I send the recording to Auphonic for leveling and noise reduction. Depending on length, Auphonic might complete its processing almost immediately or take 24 hours.

Sometime in here I start collecting images for the cover art and music. If a specific song or piece is mentioned in the fic, I'll usually add at least a little of it. If not, I try to find something that evokes the same emotions as the fic, and use bits of that. I tend to use music or sound effects for section breaks rather than silence.

Then the project gets a final re-listen and edit. Sometimes I get a beta listener before my own final edit, sometimes I don't. Mostly this editing pass is for 1) removing any obvious noises that Auphonic didn't take out, such as obtrusive breathing or mouth clicks, 2) correcting any weird-length silences (too much or too little space between sentences or paragraphs--I do this by eye mostly, gauging the gaps in the waveform--and 3) adding any music. Of course, if there's any narration error, I'll fix those. I do the fixes as a separate Garageband project and send all 30 seconds or whatever off to Auphonic for the same audio processing, then cut&paste them in where they belong.

And then there's creating the cover art. That can take as long as the recording or final edit, sometimes, especially if I'm doing something tricksy and complicated with GIMP that I don't actually know how to do yet so I have to go find a tutorial and try it over and over until I get it right.
