Random stuff
Sep. 9th, 2002 04:02 pm- Good news from Pueblo Solis
- They're adding an outdoor garden seating area
- The owner, Alfredo Solis, is opening a barbecue joint up the street at 40 & Hampton, in the building that used to be Miris Dunja Bosnian Restaurant
- Jen bought a Voyager. So mommy of her. But it occurs to me that it will come in very useful for moving stuff. ;-)
- Why is it I can never remember that I need to go get an oil change when I actually have time to do it? My car is way overdue for service.
- I finally figured out why the sound on my upstairs telephone is very very faint. I have to put it through a filter because I have DSL on the line. It'd been so long since I installed the DSL that I forgot about that when I plugged in the new telephone.
- Inspired by a typo when writing this: What if Random was Randomme?
- Painting my bedroom has gotten me excited about working on the house again. Now I'm thinking about the kids' room. I was thinking of doing it for Rosa's birthday, but I think it would be better to wait and let the two of them choose a decor together.
- All the rehashing of September 11th is getting to be hard for me to take. I feel a little weird about it, since I didn’t lose anyone, though I was briefly worried about my fiends (heh) in Boston being on one of the airplanes, until I heard from all of them and knew they hadn't been. I guess I'm finding it more tiresome than anything else. I feel like it's only causing unnecessary grief and upset.
USA Today has already been running a week of stories like "Survival on the 78th Floor". We get that paper at the office, and because it's easily available it has become the only paper I read regularly. But this last week, I have only been able to read the Life, Money and Sports sections, and even with those I have to be careful.
After last Thursday, I changed the channel on my car radio away from NPR in order to avoid stories there too. I've been listening to Classic 99 or my own CD's instead.
But on Wednesday, I think I will commemorate the anniversary in my own way. I'm not going to stay home from work, and I'm not going to watch or read the news obsessively like I did on the day itself, but I plan to put out my flag in the morning, and I will listen to Mozart's Requiem at least once during the day.
On the other hand, writing this did make me go fill out the 9-11 survey that's going around LJ. There were some things I wanted to say that fit there as well as anywhere.
Oh, and related to
darkest_eve's complaint: Patriot's Day
Wednesday, September 11 is being declared Patriot's Day by President Bush. The President is encouraging all Americans to display the flag at half-staff from their homes and observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. ET, when the first of four hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. The Administration Dept is looking into ways in which <company name> can collectively observe September 11 with appropriate remembrance activities. All employees should have received patriotic pins to wear in memory of the losses on 9-11. Please wear your pin on Wednesday, September 11 at the office and also at the Member Information Conference. If for some reason you do not receive a pin by Monday, please contact <name>.
(from the company's internal website) Grr. Is this really appropriate for a company to require? Please tell me they're not going to have a company-wide memorial service. This is a workplace, not a church.
I suppose that's enough disassociated babble for today.

Date: 2002-09-09 02:21 pm (UTC)And...am I hearing that a real date has been set for Jen to move in???? (I feel a celebratory dinner coming on--maybe even to the aforementioned Pueblo Solis??) ~g~
And also, I know what you mean about 9-11. I want all this stuff to STOP. I don't want to forget, and i don't think we should...but dammit, there is overkill--even for this. I have been very picky/careful about how much media I take in on it as well.

Date: 2002-09-09 02:45 pm (UTC)I'm as sick of the 9/11 stuff as you are; in part because it seems to focus ONLY on the Trade Towers.
Sheesh.
As far as Patriot's Day, I'm sure Dubya wouldn't consider me a patriot anyway.

Date: 2002-09-09 06:41 pm (UTC)But in any case, your company can't really required you to wear a pin if you don't want to. Freedom of expression, I believe that would be.

Date: 2002-09-09 08:20 pm (UTC)Not quite a real date, but it's definitely starting to feel more real. My confidence is rising. :-)

Date: 2002-09-09 08:22 pm (UTC)Color me dense today, but it took me a long time to get this. Finally did, though. I can almost guarantee I won't be silent at 7:46 am either. Getting Rosa ready in the morning takes lots of words. :-)
