Oct. 30th, 2008 12:23 pmThis week was the second time I've found a bird outside our building lying dead of a broken neck, presumably from flying into the window. Last time it was an indigo bunting; this time Whatbird.com tells me it's a yellow-shafted northern flicker. Both of those are relatively common bird species, but nonetheless I'd never seen one before. It's sad to have one's first glimpse of a bird species be a dead one.
I think I'm going to inquire with building maintenance as to whether there's anything we can do to help prevent the bird deaths. If I've seen two, and I know I've heard rumors of at least a couple others, it seems very likely that there have been more.
