Why is it that cling wrap doesn't...except to itself?

When I was young, and we got our first microwave, the microwave store (yes, that's all they sold, beside accessories) sold something called "Stretch-tite". It was the best damn saran wrap ever, and clung beautifully to glass and itself. It was so clingy and stretchy that you could watch it create a baloon over your food as steam expanded it in the microwave. It wouldn't burst, and it wouldn't come loose.

Hard to find the stuff, but it's still around, and damn is it good stuff.

I have never had good luck with it either. My dad insists that cheap brands don't cling and expensive brands do, but I wonder why he says that, since he always buys the cheap brands. If the expensive ones were really better, wouldn't he switch? I usually give up in disgust and resort to foil

I've found that the "industrial" stuff seems to work better. I have an aunt who used to work for a company that made it, and she'd always get us big rolls of it. It worked better than anything else I've found.
