Haven't yet; probably should. We did add about 1/2 the total volume in new water yesterday. The pond level was *way* down for no apparent reason; it had lost about eight inches since Friday.

I am really upset about the fishes. More so than I would have expected.

I still cannot find fish #5, and am now seriously wondering if the water wasn't way down due to being splashed out by a medium sized animal trying to catch a fish...and succeeding.

And the other fish died of shock/injuries while escaping/the pesticide residue on the animal's paws?

That would make sense...

It's still sad. But a lot less upsetting than the idea of a neighborhood pond poisoner.

It's haveta be bigger than Kitty to splash out over half of the water and carry off an unwilling ten inch carp, I think.
I'm thinking neighborhood dog. (But not ours, they haven't escaped recently.)

Raccoons are excellent fishercritters, but may be a bit small to splash out that quantity of water.

That'd be too cool, but alas, no, I think we are bearsless in the StLouis area.

Ya know, I wouldn't even MIND losing fish to a bear.

There are an amazing number of critters hiding out in suburbia these days--they had beaver near there (behind the CompUSA, actually) only a few years ago, just to name one unexpected type--nor would I put it past an enterprising coyote to learn to fish. Maybe the dogs have good reasons to sound off!

Sorry bout the fishes.... Are you going to get more once you figure out what happened to these? BTW, replacing the water - did you fill it from the hose or from water that had sat for a while. I don't know if Koi are as 'fragile' as aquarium fish, but we always had to either let the water sit for a time or put special tablets in it to kill the clorine in the water before adding the fish or it would kill them.

Adding to the thread about seeing more and more critters in Urban settings....I saw a red fox this weekend in Milwalkee - downtown mind you running through the outter edges of an Irish Festival! There must have been 5-10,000 people there and Mr. Fox seemed quite at home wandering along the Lake front on the fringes of the festival!

BTW, saw the full moon rise over Lake Michigan - what a site!!!

Well, dayum! I was gonna ask if there were otter in Missouri and decided that was over the top!

Beaver, otter. Can bear be far behind? And can we keep them off my step-mother's hill (on the east side of Barrett Station,opposite the Museum of Transport) for now? I don't think my dad's up for wrestling bears any more.
