Yup, Thor is indeed the Norse god of thunder. And since Norse stuff way back when included German (I'm pretty sure, anyway...) the languages are related.
Isn't etymology (that's the study of words, isn't it? If not, it's rather ironic that I messed up the word for the study of words) great?
