Aliens

Someone asked in [livejournal.com profile] randomquestions about whether we believe crop circles are made by aliens. I have a hard time believing alien intelligent beings would travel all the way to earth just to act like malicious teenagers playing mailbox baseball. Ultimately that's my problem with all the reported UFO sightings and alien abductions as well. If they're going to bother to come all the way to Earth, wouldn't they appear to more people than one old farmer in his pickup on a lonely road in Nebraska?

I don't know whether I believe aliens exist: it's certainly possible, though I've read well-grounded arguments both ways. I don't see any good reason why humans ought to believe we're the pinnacle of evolution, but I don't really believe that any aliens have come here yet. I'm not sure I would want them to. The only things I can think of that are sufficient reason for the expense of interstellar travel are colonization/conquest or exploitation of natural resources, neither of which is likely to be much good for the current inhabitants of the planet. If there are friendly aliens out there, we will hear from them through radio or other transmissions, not personal visits.

Crop circiles have been proven to be a hoax. You actualy *can* make them with just 2 guys with wooden boards and some rope.

But that dosn't convince the conspiracy theorists.
