Pleasant morning

I went to pick up Rosa from Ray's this morning, and he invited me to stay for waffles. We had a nice breakfast with conversation. Nothing serious or personal, but it was pleasant and comfortable. If we can treat each other like this all the time we'll do well.

I saw him yesterday also--he lent me his car and trailer, and helped me move some furniture for Rosa. I bought him dinner at Dairy Queen, and again, it was all very pleasant.

Pleasant is an enormous improvement.

And one more thing...A mystery solved.

Ray is the one who taught her to say "I burped in my butt". He thought it sounded better than "I farted".

Nap

The combination of late nights and early mornings has been catching up with me.

I tried to use the around-the-block method to put Rosa down for her nap, but it was too cold and rainy. So we jumped in the car and drove out the highway for ten minutes and back again. She was asleep halfway through the outward journey. I was fighting sleep by the middle of the return journey.

I brought her inside and laid her on my bed and curled up around her. That was 2:00. She's still asleep. I'm awake but barely. I'm considering going back to bed. But we have to be somewhere at 5:00, and I don't want to be overly late. (Retirement party for a coworker from two-three jobs ago. She was a good friend, and I also got to know her daughter well, and haven't seen either of them for a couple years. I'd like to catch up a bit.)

Building a relationship is like building a bridge. Sometimes the end result is not the same as you envisioned: a highway overpass where you dreamed of a New England covered bridge, a pedestrian footbridge where you wanted the Golden Gate. But whatever happens to the bridge in the end, the landscape is permanently changed by its construction, and even if it is washed out by flood there are likely to be broken beams and spars still standing.
