Probably my least favorite way to spend an hour: paying the bills. Even though I use internet bill pay, and most of them are on auto-pay...I think I'd rather clean the cat box. I know I would: I certainly do that far more often.

Went to see Minority Report with Jen this afternoon. It was a pretty good movie, which surprised me. I hadn't wanted to see it until I saw a couple of very positive reviews, but then I decided to give it a chance. I quite enjoyed it, except for the scene which triggered my eye-injury-phobia. I hid my face in her shoulder until it was over--so sue me. Some things I just can't take. Anyway, it was good. I liked the concept of vertical highways, the spider-things were far too resourceful, and yes, I did figure out what was going on fairly early on. Still, it was a good adaptation of sci-fi, and that's always a positive.

Then she went home to rest, and I wandered over to PrideFest. Missed her IM that she'd go with me (::pout::) because I had already left. (::grumble::) I didn't really stay long or do much: joined the Human Rights Commission, bought a couple little things, ate some food, and listened to about half the Judy Tenuta show. I was not really impressed. I realize my sense of humor works better in company of people I like, but still, I thought she was a little too overdone and didn't really have any new jokes, just old ones. What really pissed me off was the old tired "What do lesbians do in bed anyway? Who's the guy?" No, you idiot, that's the whole point! I left after that. Came home, read the newspaper, and paid the aforementioned bills. How exciting.

Postscript: Charter and Laclede are still charging me for service at my old apartment. I moved out of there in February. And canceled the service. Grrrr. Now I have to make phone calls tomorrow: another thing I really really hate.

NPR ran a story this morning about Justice Scalia and his support for the death penalty. It began by saying he had vehemently dissented from the recent decision that declared it unconstitutional to execute the mentally retarded, and went on to cover a speech he made at the University of Chicago recently. Listen here if you want to scream at your computer.

He made many insulting comments, references to incorrect history, and was very self-righteous and full of himself. He claimed that judges who believe the death penalty is immoral must resign from the justice system. He claimed that the only reason the death penalty has been abolished in Europe is that Europe is "post-christian"; that it remains popular here in the "church-going United States" because "to a believing christian death is no big deal". Oh, and he said the death penalty can't possibly be cruel and unusual punishment because it existed when the constitution was written. Yes, and torture existed then (and still does) but that doesn't make it right!

My fingers are spontaneously cramping into fists. I'm fighting the urge to scream even now just thinking about it. I really was screaming back at the radio. Unfortunately I was so angry all I could do was call him a bastard and an asshole--not exactly reasoned or intelligent discourse.

And this is why I hate making phone calls. I've just spent half an hour being told it's my fault that Laclede Gas billed me for four months of service at my old address when I moved out in February. "I don't show an order to turn off the gas. Why didn't you call sooner? You need to call the owners of the apartment and ask them to take responsibility for that bill." Fuck me sideways, bitch.
