This essay, on the "Uncanny Valley" in human reactions to non-human and near-human Others, is fascinating. It sheds light on a lot of literature and folk tales, as well as implications for the future in both science fiction and reality. Serendipity at work, because A.I. was an example of exactly this disconnect.
