I'd been wanting it for a while...I think I posted about the idea sometime this summer: a dragon on the small of my back. At first I wanted a sleeping dragon, to symbolize a hidden ferocity, but one evening while watching Fellowship of the Ring with Jen I realized that what I really wanted was the dragon from Bilbo's map.
Lurking about the house this morning, trying to figure out what to do with myself today, I decided to find a picture of that dragon and take it with me. I already knew I was going to see Frida (of which more later), but I determined that afterward, I'd go to Iron Age and get the dragon done. So I looked in my copies of both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, only to find that the map, while based on the one in the flyleaf of The Hobbit, was different. So I turned on my DVD player, selected the appropriate scene, and paused the movie. I tried to trace the picture, but without success: it was too light. So resourceful me went and got my digital camera and took this picture of the screen. Then I printed it out on my inkjet and put it in my pocket.
Went to the movie.
Drove to Iron Age and fought with myself for several minutes in the parking lot over actually getting out and going in. Finally I used the mantra (Do one thing every day that scares you) and made myself go. It took about an hour for the actual art, plus another hour beforehand of hanging around waiting for my turn. Turns out that the red color of the original was not suitable, since it would have to be outlined in black and then there'd be no sense in red shading. I rather like the black, however. I got the artist to take a picture of the result, since it will be rather difficult for me to photograph my own back. Maybe after it heals I'll convince someone to take another pic. In the meantime...
