How does snow break axles? How deep was it? (We get areas of all-winter snow in California, and I've lived in them, but I wasn't driving then.)

Weeell, the snow didn't break the axle. The snow made me slide through an intersection, run up over the curb, and hit a stop sign. One of those latter two things broke the axle. I'm blaming the curb.

I'm guessing the snow caused a skid or inability to stop, and something harder was hit to break the axle.

Ai!! *HUG* I'm very sorry about your car, but mostly thankful that while you were skidding through the ice and snow, neither you or R were damaged. Hope it's not too much of a bear to fix.
