If there's a more frustrating way to start my day than being stuck in a traffic jam for over an hour, I don't ever want to encounter it. My already-long 30-mile commute took nearly two hours today. They're repaving Hwy 70 in front of the airport, due to a hellacious pothole problem. That's all well and good, but when I first hear the radio traffic report just after I've exited onto the fateful highway, I'm not at all happy about it. The area was already under lane restrictions because of bridge reconstructions, and now it is down to a single narrow lane. It took me over an hour to get past the construction area, less than five miles in length.

Tomorrow I'll try going north to 370 and see if that's any better. It adds at least five miles to the drive, but it's a nice highway and rarely congested; if they're still working on 70 it can't possibly take longer.

isn't it neat and weird...

to think that so many people we know live along a major road, just hundreds or thousands of miles apart?

i live just off of I-270 (connects i-70 to DC beltway) in maryland. I-70 is about 20 minutes north of where i live. i take 70 or US40 (well, i split off onto a few other roads to avoid the pennsylvania turnpike) home to indiana, where my parents live 10 miles north of it. if i want to visit [livejournal.com profile] ismene, i drive an hour west from my parents'... i know i have tons more folks along it. another several hours and i come to st. louis.

and i can take i-95 (or US 1) to see my in-laws, friends in philly, NJ, NY, NC, FL... the list goes on.

US 29 runs past here down to charlottesville, va, where i want to move... the road goes right past boy's office, which is across the river from georgetown. past charlottesville, i-64 reaches out past st. louis...

US35 travels past my parents' home down to a few miles north of charlottesville...

sometimes the thought of all these roads rankle me... they bring pollution, congestion... they cut off wetlands... cut through neighborhoods...

but they're also a remarkable feat of engineering and civilization... we took what the Romans refined and made it huge. it's kind of scary. and kind of beautiful. and often ugly.

but wow.
