Girl Power!
Dec. 16th, 2006 08:01 pmI want to create a playlist which I'll burn to CD for Rosa. I'm calling it "Girl Power!" but the themes I want are self-confidence, independence, and equality. My intent is to counteract the subliminal indoctrination into "femininity" and "needing a man" that she is getting from everywhere else.
So far I've got:
1. Beautiful, Christina Aguilera
2. Yes I Am, Melissa Etheridge
3. You Gotta Be, Des'ree
4. Greatest Love of All, Whitney Houston
5. I Am Woman, Helen Reddy
6. Testimony, FERRON
7. Hands, Jewel
8. The Impossible Dream, Man of La Mancha
Songs I want to add but aren't in iTunes:
1. Don't Surrender, Joan Jett
2. If It Wasn't for the Women, Alix Dobkin
Possibilities
1. Bitch, Meredith Brooks (we're waffling on this one as to whether it's appropriate for a seven-year-old, although I have no issue at all with its message)
2. Now I'm in Charge of Me, Angela Taylor (I haven't heard the whole thing nor found the lyrics, but the sample and description are promising--anybody have this?)
3. Girl Power, the Cheetah Girls (and others from the same album...holding off in case Tammy G has it)
Things we thought of but have discounted for various reasons
1. RESPECT, Aretha Franklin (We want her to think of respect as something you always have, not something you have to plead with your man to grant you)
2. Bad Reputation, Joan Jett (I think this one requires a bit too much subtle discernment to get the right message out of)
ETA: To make clear what I intended to ask in the first place, does anyone have any suggestions that might fit this theme?

Date: 2006-12-17 05:01 am (UTC)(Oh na, na, na)
She hosts a T.V. show - she rides the rodeo
she plays the bass in a band
she's an astronaut -
a valet at the parking lot
a farmer working the land
she is a champion - she gets the gold
she's a ballerina -the star of the show
Chorus:
She's - not - just a pretty face
she's - got - everything it takes
She has a fashion line
a journalist for *Time*
coaches a footbal team
she's a geologist - a romance novelist
she's a mother of three
she is a soldier - she is a wife
she is a surgeon - she'll save your life
Chorus:
She's - not - just a pretty face
she's - got - everything it takes
she's - mother - of the human race
she's - not - just a pretty face
Oh, oh, yeah
Oh na, na, na, na.....
she is your waitress - she is your judge -
she is your teacher
she is every woman in the world
Oh la, la, la
she flies an airplane -
she drives a subway train
at night she pumps gasoline
she's on the council - she's on the board
she's a polotician - she praises the lord
(Repeat Second Chorus)
No, she's (she's) not (not) -
just a pretty face
she's (she's) got (got) - everything it takes
she's - not - just a pretty face
she's got everything it takes
she's not just a pretty face

Date: 2006-12-17 05:21 am (UTC)Some of these might not be appropriate. Hunt the lyrics. And not all of them are specifically girl power, some are just self-power. Snippets from the ones on my mix available at:
http://tryslora.livejournal.com/tag/affirmation+mix
One Girl Revolution (Superchic(k))
You Learn (Alanis)
Don't let me Get Me (Pink)
Nothing's Wrong With Me (Zetta Bytes)
Stand Your Ground (Debbie Gibson)
Praise Chorus (Jimmy Eat World)
If You Want to Sing Out (Cat Stevens)
Change Your Mind (Sister Hazel)
Who Are They To Say (Leah Andreone)
There are others, but those are the ones that stand out. And of course, my list includes Affirmation. Definitely get your address to me and I'll get the two disk set into the mail ASAP.

Date: 2006-12-17 05:52 pm (UTC)Maria Muldaur' "Im a Woman". There are 3 references to sex, but I think they'd go over Rosa's head.

For such a worthy project I can provide an mp3.
