semperfiona: Conversation hearts on the keys of a piano (piano hearts)

I want to create a playlist which I'll burn to CD for Rosa. I'm calling it "Girl Power!" but the themes I want are self-confidence, independence, and equality. My intent is to counteract the subliminal indoctrination into "femininity" and "needing a man" that she is getting from everywhere else.

So far I've got:

1. Beautiful, Christina Aguilera
2. Yes I Am, Melissa Etheridge
3. You Gotta Be, Des'ree
4. Greatest Love of All, Whitney Houston
5. I Am Woman, Helen Reddy
6. Testimony, FERRON
7. Hands, Jewel
8. The Impossible Dream, Man of La Mancha

Songs I want to add but aren't in iTunes:

1. Don't Surrender, Joan Jett
2. If It Wasn't for the Women, Alix Dobkin

Possibilities

1. Bitch, Meredith Brooks (we're waffling on this one as to whether it's appropriate for a seven-year-old, although I have no issue at all with its message)
2. Now I'm in Charge of Me, Angela Taylor (I haven't heard the whole thing nor found the lyrics, but the sample and description are promising--anybody have this?)
3. Girl Power, the Cheetah Girls (and others from the same album...holding off in case Tammy G has it)

Things we thought of but have discounted for various reasons

1. RESPECT, Aretha Franklin (We want her to think of respect as something you always have, not something you have to plead with your man to grant you)
2. Bad Reputation, Joan Jett (I think this one requires a bit too much subtle discernment to get the right message out of)

ETA: To make clear what I intended to ask in the first place, does anyone have any suggestions that might fit this theme?

Yep, Annie Lenox has a great song on one of her earlier albums about how women are doing it for themselves.

She's Not Just a Pretty Face (by Shania Twain)

SHE'S NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE

(Oh na, na, na)

She hosts a T.V. show - she rides the rodeo
she plays the bass in a band
she's an astronaut -
a valet at the parking lot
a farmer working the land
she is a champion - she gets the gold
she's a ballerina -the star of the show

Chorus:
She's - not - just a pretty face
she's - got - everything it takes

She has a fashion line
a journalist for *Time*
coaches a footbal team
she's a geologist - a romance novelist
she's a mother of three
she is a soldier - she is a wife
she is a surgeon - she'll save your life

Chorus:
She's - not - just a pretty face
she's - got - everything it takes
she's - mother - of the human race
she's - not - just a pretty face

Oh, oh, yeah
Oh na, na, na, na.....
she is your waitress - she is your judge -
she is your teacher
she is every woman in the world

Oh la, la, la
she flies an airplane -
she drives a subway train
at night she pumps gasoline
she's on the council - she's on the board
she's a polotician - she praises the lord

(Repeat Second Chorus)

No, she's (she's) not (not) -
just a pretty face
she's (she's) got (got) - everything it takes
she's - not - just a pretty face
she's got everything it takes
she's not just a pretty face

It got reformatted absolutely horribly. Shania Twain is a bit of a country artist but she does have some good songs including this one.

I had my students listen to it in Japan. It was my way of trying to aspire my girls to do things they wouldn't normally think of doing.

I second the Shania recommendation. There are several songs on the Affirmation disks I'll be sending you (I warned Paul when I made them that a lot of the Affirmation songs are girl power songs). Scarily, a lot of them are ones I've picked up from Disney TV movies, because there's a LOT of themes about loving yourself and being true to yourself there.

Some of these might not be appropriate. Hunt the lyrics. And not all of them are specifically girl power, some are just self-power. Snippets from the ones on my mix available at:

http://tryslora.livejournal.com/tag/affirmation+mix

One Girl Revolution (Superchic(k))
You Learn (Alanis)
Don't let me Get Me (Pink)
Nothing's Wrong With Me (Zetta Bytes)
Stand Your Ground (Debbie Gibson)
Praise Chorus (Jimmy Eat World)
If You Want to Sing Out (Cat Stevens)
Change Your Mind (Sister Hazel)
Who Are They To Say (Leah Andreone)

There are others, but those are the ones that stand out. And of course, my list includes Affirmation. Definitely get your address to me and I'll get the two disk set into the mail ASAP.

Oh! And the mix CDs I'll be sending aren't 7year old appropriate as a whole - there are a few songs which are definitely not for younger ears. But there is good stuff on there.

Hm, I may even have some other stuff on the kids' cds in my car. I'll need to look.

Don't Let Me Get Me is good, but I rather like Stupid Girls (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/pink/stupidgirls.html) more (it's on my Grrl Pow'r iPod mix ^-^).

I'm big on Fiona Apple: Sleep to Dream (http://www.cs.uofs.edu/~lauras/fiona/lyrics/tidal_fr.html#sleep),
and Extraordinary Machine (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/fionaapple/extraordinarymachine.html) are excellent.

And a few other suggestions (available on iTunes as far as I know, but let me know if you can't find any and I'll fileshare them to you):
Control (http://poe.org/lyrics.php?content=lyrics&song=control) - Poe
Soak Up the Sun (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/sherylcrow/soakupthesun.html) - Sheryl Crow
Life Uncommon (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/jewel/lifeuncommon.html) - Jewel
Survivor (http://www.lyrics007.com/Destiny's%20Child%20Lyrics/Survivor.%20Lyrics.html) - Destiny's Child
What You Waiting For? (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/gwenstefani/whatyouwaitingfor.html) - Gwen Steffani
Just a Girl (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nodoubt/justagirl.html) - No Doubt
When I Grow Up (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/garbage/whenigrowup.html) -Garbage
Drive (http://incubus-online-view.com/iframe/my.php#8) - Incubus
You Get What You Give (http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/TechnicolorLover/lyricstotrack02.html) - New Radicals

Maria Muldaur' "Im a Woman". There are 3 references to sex, but I think they'd go over Rosa's head.

For such a worthy project I can provide an mp3.

What a cool idea. I was thinking of doing something similar for my friend Daw's daughter, since she says she likes grrl punk, but most of what she listens to is straight corporate-issue. I'll have to add some of these to the mix...

I want to add something by Ani Difranco or Indigo Girls, but can't think of specific songs without their CDs at hand. I did find this useful site though:

Cool project!

(I wandered in via [livejournal.com profile] 42answers, hope you don't mind, I love mixing theemed CDs!)

Ani Difranco's 32 Flavors (you gotta be careful with this one though because she's recorded it an infinite number of times and some aren't as good as others).

Also, Hi! I'm Becky's younger daughter.
