The other day, I bought the next book in Jacqueline Carey's "Kushiel" series, Kushiel's Justice. Started reading it yesterday, and brought it to work with me today and was reading it in the lunchroom. I kept feeling self-conscious, as if somehow the other people in the room would be able to tell that it's a book full of hot sex. Meep. It's not even got anyone naked on the cover!

I know when I was reading the first one, I got comments from my boss based on the cover art.

On the other hand, while sitting in the lunch room reading Poppy Z. Brite's Missing Mile, with the hot gay sex scenes, no one had any idea what I was reading...

True, the first three all feature Phedre's naked-and-tattooed back, and I probably wouldn't read them at the office either. But this one has a blond girl in a yellow dress! (Who is one of the people having lots of hot sex in the book, but you couldn't tell that from the front cover.)

Give them something to talk about I say. I usually take the covers off (well that's hard backs) anyway so no one ever sees the covers. But you know, if I'm reading a Laurell book - chances are it's got hot sex in it somewhere. Well, ok, sex at least.

Maybe I'm just getting old, or maybe I just don't care but I could give a rip what folks in the lunch room think these days! :)

There've been a couple books where I actually put white paper covers on them so no one could see what I was reading (the ethical slut, due to the title, and in the flesh, which featured a woman's chest with a bikini attached with hooks in the skin instead of straps).
