_TrueBlood_
Oct. 8th, 2008 04:19 pmTammie has been following Charlaine Harris's "Southern Vampire" series, and I've read and enjoyed a few of the books as well. So when _TrueBlood_ showed up on HBO, based on that series, we set it to record on the DVR. We've now watched the first four episodes, and I can't say as I like it.
octette and I had a conversation to this effect after I'd watched the first one, and I haven't much changed my opinion since.
The series intro is creepy and disturbing: washed-out images of sleazy strippers, decomposing roadkill, bloody lips, etc. And the series itself is creepy and depressing as well. It's far darker than I remember the books being, and far less humor-filled. Feels like a horror flick. It has the most unsexy sex scenes I can remember--and a lot of them. Louisiana is being condescended to where the books poked gentle fun with affection.
I don't care for many of the characters, either. Sookie's brother Jason is an unmitigated asshole, but even he didn't deserve the horrific thing that happened to him last episode. Or even if he did, I did not want to watch it. I do like Tara, but her inexplicable attachment to Jason makes me want to kick her.
Sookie's love interest, the vampire Bill Compton, is too creepy. I can't believe that she finds him appealing. He reminds me of the kind of guy who never does anything overtly bad or threatening, but when you walk somewhere after dark will pop out suddenly to ask you where you're going.
The one positive thing I can think of? I like the music.
