semperfionaAbout six months ago, I got a new haircut. I'd had long straight hair for over 30 years, only switching between bangs and no bangs every few years. I'd dyed it red for a while, 1997-2003 or so, red with black streaks for part of that time, then dyed it black once at the end of that, and afterward let it fade back to my natural dark blonde/light brown, until last summer I dyed the underside at the back a brilliant peacock blue.
At the end of March, I cut it short, in a shaggy angled bob, and dyed all of the under layers that same blue. Then three months ago I switched the blue to green.
In these six months I have gotten more compliments on my hair than I think I got over the entire period of its being long-straight-natural, and even than when it was long-straight-partly-blue (I can't entirely remember how it went while it was red and black). When I'm feeling down, a no-strings-attached compliment goes a long way.
It's been so long since I had a haircut more than twice a year, and even longer since I had anything else done to my hair regularly. I'm having to modify my self-identity: I've not been a person who gets her hair done as anything more than a semiannual chore, and suddenly I'm spending four hours in a salon every other month. Weird.
