After working in this building nigh three years, last week I did the necessary things to be able to use the fitness room: I signed the medical waiver. Yes, that's all it required, and yes, I am that much of a lazy ass.

Today, I finally used the equipment for the first time. I did 36:57 on the treadmill, totalling about 1.9 miles. I was dripping with sweat afterward, and took advantage of the shower rooms $COMPANY has thoughtfully provided along with the fitness equipment.

Bringing a book was a good plan. It made the time go by much more easily. Book-on-iPod would also work well, especially for other machines.

Next time: bring soap and shampoo. Bring water bottle or cup to workout room.

One of the reasons I'm trying to get back into better shape is in order to be a more productive and useful member of the CERT team. (Yes, that's like ATM machine or PIN number. But it seems that for me, most acronyms do better as adjectives than as nouns. The counterexamples of NASA and other government agencies notwithstanding.) It occurred to me recently that I'd do much better lifting disaster victims, or debris off of them, and be able to do it longer, if I improved my stamina and strength.

Not the same as a teddy bear picnic, though it might have started as one.

Last night was the second class in my CERT training, Medical Operations Part 1: Triage. We learned about the three things you treat as a part of doing triage: Airway, Bleeding, and Shock, and then about the order of checking and about tagging victims as Walking Wounded, Immediate, Delayed, or Dead.

So as an exercise, the trainers had set up the warehouse with about twenty injured teddy bears. They were hidden on shelves, in boxes, behind things...one was hanging up on a fence. Each bear had a card describing its response to the triage steps, and we had to tag them.

The exercise was more notable for failures than successes, I think.

Where we went wrong, or lessons to take to the next exercise:
1. Didn't bring a pen to make notes of number and locations of victims. Memory did not suffice.
2. Didn't call out for the walking wounded before entering the scene. (This may have been due to an assumption on our part, that teddies can't walk.)
3. Teams all searching the same spaces at the same time instead of allocating sections.
4. A couple of bears that should have been immediate got tagged delayed, and one that should've been tagged delayed was tagged walking wounded. Likely that the first two died before we got back to bring them out.
5. Missed one bear completely. Was in a box under a table. We did find several others that were in boxes, however.

So I'm caught up with LJ, twitter, email and slacktivist, which makes this the part where I'm supposed to put down the computer and get ready for work. I have assorted garage items I need to find and take with me, too. But a twelve-hour day lies ahead of me and I haven't even had any coffee yet, and I don' wanna! I'll post, instead.

The reason I have to collect the assorted items from my garage is that tomorrow $COMPANY is sponsoring a carnival day for charity. My team, as you might guess if you remember that our aisle is a putting green, is running a chip shot contest.

The reason I have a twelve-hour day ahead is that I volunteered for the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), and the training is after work on Mondays. Must wear comfortable clothes, it's hands-on training. Today is first aid.

Yesterday my ex-husband was awarded his master's degree. He invited me to the ceremony, and I went. Commencements are boring as hell, honestly, but I had been supportive of his endeavor where his family often were not, and it seemed like the right thing to do. But UMSL is crazy, scheduling commencement exercises for Mother's Day!

At least we had waffles with strawberries and cream at home first. Nom nom nom.
