I was a complete idiot and stayed up until 4:15 am for no good reason at all--started a book at 11:30, wanted to finish it--but I woke up at 7:30! I went back to bed but still only managed to sleep in until now. I'm not even tired.

I started smelling a rather strong odor of burning and went out to the kitchen to check. I had just put a pan of water on the stove to boil to fix myself instant navratan korma, but I had turned on the wrong burner and was heating an empty teakettle instead. Brand new teakettle, too. I think I was in time to avert disaster, but we shall soon see.

[livejournal.com profile] papersky just showed up on my friend-of list today (Hello, welcome :-) )...and seeing her there reminded me to go off and read The King's Name, which had been sitting on my to-read pile for quite some time. I've just finished it.

Eeep, though, now I'm expecting a question like "What did you think of it?" and I'm danged lousy at book reviews. I enjoyed it. I'd been a bit worried that I would be lost, as it's more than two years since I read The King's Peace, but everything came back quickly. Prologue helped with that. I very much like Sulien; she seems like a person I would like to know. The books feel like the reminiscences of an old soldier, telling the story of her life, which happens to coincide with a very pivotal time in the history of her country. I suppose I have to say country; it doesn't quite seem like the right term but nothing else better comes to mind. Land, perhaps.
