I dragged myself to work early this morning for a meeting. Only to find a notice in my email that it had been postponed until Monday afternoon. I coulda slept another half hour. Oh well, at least getting here early means I won't have to feel guilty about leaving promptly at 5 to pick up Jen for dinner and The Laramie Project tonight.

I am now registered for ACN 2002. Yay me.

After seeing all the posts recently about "interests no one else has", and feeling left out because all of mine were linked, I added a bunch more interests. Then I went to the similar users page again, and found that of the top 150 names listed, exactly two are on my current friends list: [livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil at 37, and [livejournal.com profile] tafkar at 137. I obviously still need to refine my interests list, because I know I have stuff in common with others on my friends list!

From [livejournal.com profile] dyanearden this time...

When was the last time you...
1....sent a handwritten letter?

To [livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil, on or around May 14.

2. ...baked something from scratch or made something by hand?

For [livejournal.com profile] tafkar's Unique Things Project, last Sunday. (And I still haven't mailed them, ack.)

3. ...camped in a tent?

The weekend of April 30. It rained. A lot.

4. ...volunteered your time to church, school, or community?

::sheepish:: I can't recall anything more recent than 5 years ago or so. I tend to donate money more often than time. My last monetary donation was to the Human Rights Commission at PrideFest on June 23.

5. ...helped a stranger?

I can't remember anything specific, but I get asked for directions fairly regularly, and I'm always willing to help.

So...[livejournal.com profile] mactavish is contagious. Ever since following the links in her post I've been playing with double dactyls all afternoon. Being who I am, I had to make one about Amber.

Patternfall Schmatternfall
Swayvill the Emperor,
Showing few brains and an
Excess of brawn,

Aristocratically
Sneered at the Amberite
Conquerors calling them
Unicorn spawn.

Some days I really wish I fit in better here. There's a conversation going on in the office behind me taking the conservative and/or Christian--i.e. the other--side of every issue that has been on my mind lately. I just cringe.

"Human beings are the only animal that doesn't protect its children. We say 'it's an alternative lifestyle' or 'he didn't mean to'."

"Over in the middle East, they raise little children to chant 'Death to America' and we can't even teach our children to say 'this is our country and this is why we love it'?"

This is one of those cases [livejournal.com profile] diva7 asked about in another venue: when people say things that just make my skin crawl, but I keep my mouth closed and pretend not to hear because I don't want to rock the boat. It's just not worth it. No one's mind is going to be changed, and the only thing that will happen is that I create an interpersonal conflict in the office.

I just received an email from the CEO. The infamous and aggravating dress code policy has been somewhat relaxed. They've realized that we've spent more time in the last six months worrying about people's pantyhose than actually working!

What a lovely evening. Dinner out at one of my favorite restaurants--oh and the chocolate covered strawberries for dessert! Then The Laramie Project which was just stunning. The breadth and depth of the exploration of one small town made it clear that Laramie is no different from anywhere else. However much we might like to feel superior in our big city, the same gamut of people are found everywhere.

Added much later (5pm, 7/2)

I forgot to mention we had Front Row Seats! The last time I had front row seats for anything was freshman year in college, when I had a front row seat for REO Speedwagon at Assembly Hall. Unfortunately, I was at the concert alone, and did not know the music--having grown up on Contemporary Christian--so I was not really into it very much.

And at intermission the string quartet asked me to take their picture with the composer. Only now do I realize I should have asked them to sign my program.
